We claim the Handmaid cloak as a modern symbol of resistance.  Our uniformity sends a message of solidarity and anonymity - a reminder that we the people are the true power.  The “The Handmaid’s Tale” authored and envisioned by Margaret Atwood, later developed into an Award winning TV Series, presents a warning of a fascist future shaped by religious nationalism.  We call attention to the similarity of our current political climate in Washington, DC and we send forth the message that we refuse to accept a fascist America.  

Yes!  We encourage a few different options for those who prefer not to dress as Handmaids.  Option one: you attend as a “Guardian” and wear all black and optional black face covering.   We aim to keep the Handmaid Army DC inclusive of Gender and Expression.   If you show up dressed as a warrior, or superhero, or historical figure, we will not complain either! Please do respect our group and leadership.  We request when marching in formation Handmaids are placed in front, typically two by two, with Guardians in black behind, and Attendees behind Guardians. We would love for you to register ("enlist") and let us know your costume/ role preference.  We also encourage plain clothed attendees to join us to observe and support. The Handmaid Costume is a Red hooded cloak with a white bonnet (And optional red face mask)  There are many available options to buy the costume online.  For those who have the budget, you can even buy from an Etsy store in Kyiv, Ukraine!  Here are links to several online options, but you can keep an eye out on FB Marketplace & at your local thrift stores, as well!

HOSTELS- For solo travelers and/or those on a budget, we HIGHLY recommend considering one of the many great hostels in or around the DC area for their affordability and other perks! Hostels are ideal for socializing, offering a community atmosphere and activities that foster connections with other travelers. They also provide a unique, flexible, and convenient experience, often including amenities like communal kitchens, free tours, and social common areas that hotels lack.
